2022 | Centre de la photographie Gen\u00e8ve<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Centre de la photographie Gen\u00e8ve presents Behold The Ocean<\/em>, a visual storytelling project documenting climate research in Patagonia by Akosua Viktoria Adu-Sanyah, a German-Ghanaian artist and photographer based in Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From December 2020 to January 2021, amid the global pandemic, the artist embarked on a maritime expedition through the Strait of Magellan to the glacier of Santa In\u00e9s, at the most Southern tip of the Americas. Accompanying a small Chilean team studying shifts in the marine ecosystem triggered by climate change, she gradually discovered the raw beauty and fragility of this environment, in a region particularly exposed to its effects. This experience triggered reflections on the centralisation and institutionalisation of scientific research and some of the resulting issues: limitations to access to the data gathered by international teams which are often not made public for several years, stark inequalities in the conditions of local and international researchers, or limited attention to the needs of local communities, among many others. As a result, she considered how art could support scientific research and conceptualised alternative models\u2009\u2013\u2009decentralised and deinstitutionalised\u2009\u2013\u2009for the financing of scientific research. From the material gathered during the first expedition\u2009\u2013\u2009photographs, videos, data\u2009\u2013\u2009she produced a series of NFTs that were made available for sale, aiming to finance a new expedition with the same team. Her art on the blockchain successfully financed part of a new expedition that took place in June 2022, in the commune of Cape Horn in the Ant\u00e1rtica Chilena Province, from Punta Arenas through the Beagle channel to Yendegaia and Wulaia Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She documented some core elements of the team\u2019s research: the acidification of the ocean (as the glaciers melt and add freshwater to the sea), which in turns induces the proliferation of harmful red tide algal species. Another focus is the study of kelp, a brown alga which might help stabilise such ecosystems in the future. This second voyage was fraught with the difficulties that many such small independent teams face: dangerous weather, fragile equipment, limited finances and resources, diverging priorities, or interpersonal tensions. Akosua Viktoria Adu-Sanyah documented this intense collective experience, alternating between the roughness of the daily life on board, the complexities of climate research, and the magnificence of the ecosystem, equally threatening and vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expressing the visual beauty and ruggedness of the Patagonian landscapes and of the realities of scientific research, Behold The Ocean<\/em> highlights the unpredictable pacing of sea travel, the unfamiliar sound environment, alongside issues such as intimacy, vulnerability and sorority within such an expedition. The exhibition retraces these multiple layers and the different stages of the project in a site-specific installation, based on chromogenic prints made by the artist and designed for the spaces of the Centre de la photographie Gen\u00e8ve, reflecting equally on the personal experience of the artist and the realities of those who dedicate their lives to the study of their environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Centre de la photographie Gen\u00e8ve pr\u00e9sente Behold The Ocean<\/em>, un projet de narration visuelle documentant la recherche climatique en Patagonie, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par Akosua Viktoria Adu-Sanyah, artiste et photographe germano-ghan\u00e9enne bas\u00e9e en Suisse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De d\u00e9cembre 2020 \u00e0 janvier 2021, en pleine pand\u00e9mie, l’artiste a embarqu\u00e9 pour une exp\u00e9dition maritime \u00e0 travers le d\u00e9troit de Magellan jusqu’au glacier de Santa In\u00e9s, \u00e0 l’extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 la plus m\u00e9ridionale des Am\u00e9riques. Accompagnant une petite \u00e9quipe chilienne qui \u00e9tudie les transformations des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes marins provoqu\u00e9s par le changement climatique, elle d\u00e9couvre progressivement la beaut\u00e9 brute et la fragilit\u00e9 de cet environnement, dans une r\u00e9gion particuli\u00e8rement expos\u00e9e \u00e0 ses effets. Cette exp\u00e9rience a d\u00e9clench\u00e9 des interrogations sur la centralisation et l’institutionnalisation de la recherche scientifique et sur certains probl\u00e8mes qui en r\u00e9sultent : accessibilit\u00e9 limit\u00e9e des donn\u00e9es recueillies par les \u00e9quipes internationales, qui ne sont souvent pas rendues publiques avant plusieurs ann\u00e9es, in\u00e9galit\u00e9s criantes dans les conditions des chercheurs locaux et internationaux, ou encore l\u2019attention port\u00e9e aux besoins des communaut\u00e9s locales. Elle a donc r\u00e9fl\u00e9chi \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re dont l’art pourrait soutenir la recherche scientifique et a conceptualis\u00e9 des mod\u00e8les alternatifs \u2013 d\u00e9centralis\u00e9s et d\u00e9sinstitutionnalis\u00e9s \u2013  pour le financement de la recherche scientifique. \u00c0 partir du mat\u00e9riel recueilli lors de la premi\u00e8re exp\u00e9dition \u2013 photographies, vid\u00e9os, donn\u00e9es \u2013 elle a produit une s\u00e9rie de NFT qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en vente, visant \u00e0 financer une nouvelle exp\u00e9dition avec la m\u00eame \u00e9quipe. Son art sur la blockchain a financ\u00e9 avec succ\u00e8s une partie d’une nouvelle exp\u00e9dition qui s’est d\u00e9roul\u00e9e en juin 2022, dans la commune du Cap Horn, dans la province Ant\u00e1rtica Chilena, de Punta Arenas \u00e0 Yendegaia et Wulaia Bay en passant par le canal de Beagle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elle a document\u00e9 certains \u00e9l\u00e9ments centraux des recherches de l’\u00e9quipe : l’acidification de l’oc\u00e9an (\u00e0 mesure que les glaciers fondent et ajoutent de l’eau douce \u00e0 la mer), qui induit \u00e0 son tour une mar\u00e9e rouge de diff\u00e9rentes esp\u00e8ces d’algues nuisibles. Un autre axe est l’\u00e9tude du varech, une algue brune qui pourrait contribuer \u00e0 stabiliser ces \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes \u00e0 l’avenir. Ce deuxi\u00e8me voyage a \u00e9t\u00e9 marqu\u00e9 par les difficult\u00e9s auxquelles sont confront\u00e9es de nombreuses petites \u00e9quipes ind\u00e9pendantes : m\u00e9t\u00e9o dangereuse, \u00e9quipement fragile, finances et ressources limit\u00e9es, priorit\u00e9s divergentes ou tensions interpersonnelles. Akosua Viktoria Adu-Sanyah a document\u00e9 cette exp\u00e9rience collective intense, alternant entre la brutalit\u00e9 de la vie quotidienne \u00e0 bord, la complexit\u00e9 de la recherche climatique et la magnificence de l’\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me, aussi mena\u00e7ant que vuln\u00e9rable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exprimant la beaut\u00e9 visuelle et la rudesse des paysages de Patagonie ainsi que les r\u00e9alit\u00e9s de la recherche scientifique, Behold The Ocean<\/em> met en lumi\u00e8re le rythme impr\u00e9visible des voyages en mer, l’environnement sonore peu familier, ainsi que des questions telles que l’intimit\u00e9, la vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9 et la sororit\u00e9 au sein de l\u2019exp\u00e9dition. L’exposition retrace ces couches multiples et les diff\u00e9rentes \u00e9tapes du projet dans une installation in situ, bas\u00e9e sur des tirages chromog\u00e8nes r\u00e9alis\u00e9s par l’artiste et con\u00e7us pour les espaces du Centre de la photographie Gen\u00e8ve, refl\u00e9tant \u00e0 parts \u00e9gales l’exp\u00e9rience personnelle de l’artiste et les r\u00e9alit\u00e9s de ceux qui consacrent leur vie \u00e0 l’\u00e9tude de leur environnement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
