Image David Gagnebin-de Bons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>21.07.2011<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Centre d\u2019Art Contemporain Gen\u00e8ve, Geneva<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>Contraband<\/em> is the first solo show in Switzerland of the American artist Taryn Simon \u2013 one of the major figures of contemporary photography \u2013 introducing her most recent work, <em>Contraband<\/em> (2010), an analysis of JFK airport New York, one of the world\u2019s major transport hubs, and its passengers. The series is the result of an arduous and physically demanding sojourn at the airport requiring the artist and her team to adjust to its relentless 24hr rhythm. This series shows illegal, prohibited, pirated and\/or counterfeited items detained or seized from passengers and express mail entering the United States from abroad \u2013 ranging from pharmaceuticals or drugs to Cuban cigars or animal body parts.<\/p>\n<p>The accompanying panel brought together professionals from different elds working closed with \u2013 or sometimes rather against \u2013 contraband to exchange views about the topic. Nigel Espin, Vice President Corporate Security &amp; Anti-Illicit Trade Operations at JTI, introduced the past and present of tobacco contraband, alongside the steps taken by his company to ght it. Alexandra Sch\u00fcssler, anthropologist and curator, gave both a anthropological and personal perspective on the issue. Benno Widmer, head of the International CPT &amp; Bureau for Looted Art of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, presented the efforts of the bureau in recovering looted art around the world. I presented the work of Taryn Simon and more broadly photography\u2019s take on the topic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 27\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">La premi\u00e8re exposition en Suisse de l\u2019artiste am\u00e9ricaine Taryn Simon pr\u00e9sente son travail le plus r\u00e9cent <em>Contraband<\/em>, une s\u00e9rie de photographies r\u00e9alis\u00e9e lors d\u2019un s\u00e9jour \u00e9prouvant au rythme ininterrompu de l\u2019a\u00e9roport JFK \u00e0 New York. Cette importante s\u00e9rie enregistre le flux des objets confisqu\u00e9s, contrefaits ou ill\u00e9gaux, des articles de mode aux substances illicites, et fonctionne comme un instantan\u00e9 de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 globalis\u00e9e en ce d\u00e9but de 21e si\u00e8cle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">La table ronde organis\u00e9e en parall\u00e8le a rassembl\u00e9 des professionnels de diff\u00e9rentes disciplines dont <\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">le travail touche directement \u00e0 la contrebande afin de croiser leurs exp\u00e9riences et perspectives. <\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Nigel Espin, en charge de la lutte contre la contrebande chez JTI, a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 l\u2019histoire de <\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">la contrebande du tabac et les moyens mis en \u0153uvre par son entreprise pour la contrer. Alexandra Sch\u00fcssler, anthropologue et curatrice, a donn\u00e9 une perspective \u00e0 la fois anthropologique et personnelle sur la probl\u00e9matique. Benno Widmer a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 les mesures prises par l\u2019Office f\u00e9d\u00e9ral de la culture pour retrouver l\u2019art spoli\u00e9 dans le monde entier.
