The exhibition aims to present an overview of contemporary Algerian photography in its plurality, its richness and its diversity, against the background of its currently limited international dissemination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on an open call that received close to 100 proposals as well as direct invitations to photographers, the exhibition brings together the work of over 40 international photographers with strong ties to Algeria, a majority of whom are currently based there and have not yet shown their work in Switzerland. Together, they offer multifaceted narratives of Algeria, of its complex present in light of its complicated past, and address issues such as collective and individual identity, political engagement, or contrasting aspects of daily life in the largest country of the African continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their photographic projects are regrouped in three broadly defined themes and presented in the exhibition in three monumental projections. The first theme, identity, encompasses a number of conceptual, artistic and documentary works offering reflections on collective and individual contemporary Algerian identity. Around a third of the projects are proposed by photographers from the diaspora exploring their Algerian identity and heritage. The second theme, politics, focuses on current political matters with multiple points of view on some of the most pressing issues of Algeria such as the Hirak, an ongoing movement advocating for profound political reforms through peaceful demonstrations. Other important subjects include migration and migrants crossing Algeria, the Sarahoui refugees, and Franco-Algerian history, for instance. The third theme, daily, includes a selection of primarily documentary projects focusing on daily life in very different areas of Algeria, such as celebrations in villages, work in quarries, or young people attempting to escape heatwaves in summer, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition is accompanied by a historical section that retraces important moments of the history of photography in Algeria. It is marked by Algeria\u2019s colonial history and by images produced almost exclusively by European photographers for over a century, and, afterwards, by a profound imbalance in the circulation of photographs produced by Algerians or by Europeans. This part of the exhibition problematises these issues and contextualises iconic and lesser-known photographs tied to Algerian history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019exposition a pour ambition de pr\u00e9senter un aper\u00e7u de la photographie contemporaine alg\u00e9rienne dans sa pluralit\u00e9, sa richesse et sa diversit\u00e9, alors qu\u2019elle fait l\u2019objet, \u00e0 l\u2019heure actuelle, d\u2019une diffusion internationale limit\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bas\u00e9e sur un appel \u00e0 projets qui a re\u00e7u pr\u00e8s de 100 propositions aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s d\u2019invitations faites \u00e0 certains photographes, Narratives from Algeria<\/em> rassemble le travail de plus de 40 photographes internationaux aux liens \u00e9troits avec l\u2019Alg\u00e9rie, dont une majorit\u00e9 y r\u00e9side actuellement. Ils n\u2019ont pour la plupart encore jamais expos\u00e9 en Suisse. Leurs projets livrent collectivement un r\u00e9cit multiforme de l\u2019Alg\u00e9rie, de son pr\u00e9sent complexe \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re de son pass\u00e9 difficile, et abordent des questions telles que l\u2019identit\u00e9 collective et individuelle, l\u2019engagement politique ou certaines facettes de la vie quotidienne dans le plus grand pays du continent africain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leurs projets photographiques sont regroup\u00e9s en trois th\u00e8mes, d\u00e9finis de mani\u00e8re large et ouverte, et pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s sous forme de trois projections monumentales. Le premier th\u00e8me, identit\u00e9s<\/em>, comprend une s\u00e9rie de travaux conceptuels, plasticiens ou documentaires offrant des r\u00e9flexions sur l\u2019identit\u00e9 alg\u00e9rienne contemporaine, aussi bien collective qu\u2019individuelle. Un tiers environ des projets sont propos\u00e9s par des photographes issus de la diaspora et explorant leurs origines et leur identit\u00e9 alg\u00e9riennes. Le second th\u00e8me, politiques<\/em>, pr\u00e9sente de multiples points de vue sur des probl\u00e9matiques actuelles, en particulier le hirak, un mouvement en cours appelant \u00e0 de profondes r\u00e9formes politiques par le biais de manifestations pacifiques. D\u2019autres sujets importants incluent la migration et les migrants traversant l\u2019Alg\u00e9rie, les r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s Sarahoui, ou l\u2019histoire franco-alg\u00e9rienne, notamment. Le troisi\u00e8me th\u00e8me, quotidiens<\/em>, regroupes des projets, pour la plupart documentaires, centr\u00e9s sur la vie quotidienne dans diff\u00e9rentes r\u00e9gions de l\u2019Alg\u00e9rie. Ils abordent les c\u00e9l\u00e9brations dans les villages ruraux, le travail dans les carri\u00e8res, ou les jeunes essayant d\u2019\u00e9chapper \u00e0 la chaleur de l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9, parmi d\u2019autres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019exposition est accompagn\u00e9e d\u2019une section historique retra\u00e7ant des moments importants de l\u2019histoire de la photographie en Alg\u00e9rie. Elle est marqu\u00e9e par le pass\u00e9 colonial de ce pays, et par des images produites presque exclusivement par des photographes europ\u00e9ens durant plus d\u2019un si\u00e8cle, puis par un profond d\u00e9s\u00e9quilibre dans la production et la circulation des photographies r\u00e9alis\u00e9es par les Alg\u00e9riens ou les Europ\u00e9ens. Cette section de l\u2019exposition probl\u00e9matise ces questions et contextualise des images iconiques et moins connues, li\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019histoire alg\u00e9rienne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
