Initiated in 2013, this project encompasses several hundred photographic landscapes taken in the area of Biel and Rondch\u00e2tel, near the author\u2019s studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a strange and fascinating beauty in these images, which appear simultaneously familiar and puzzling. Their photographic precision is challenged by unexpected patterns, textures and inconsistencies. We can guess that they are created through to the camera and the process of shooting, but their nature is not immediately decipherable. In addition to his formal research, Rudolf Steiner is offering with <em>Ricochet <\/em>a reflection on the role of art and the representation of landscape in the current context of the profound climatic upheavals that are affecting our environment on a global scale. Although landscape photography can be perceived a priori as a neutral form of expression, concerned above all with the beauty of a given territory, it is nevertheless almost always revealing of the relationship between man and his environment, of the ideals and fantasies that he harbours towards nature, and finally of the image that a society forms of itself. At the time of the Industrial Revolution, for example, artists were depicting grandiose and immaculate landscapes, when nature was undergoing brutal transformations due to the frenzy of human activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ricochet<\/em>\u2019s photographs are made using a photographic robot that generates several dozen contiguous shots before assembling them by computer. Used in this particular way, this method of making images sees errors accumulate since, during the 10 to 30 minute shoot, the light and weather conditions change and generate visual aberrations. They symbolically echo the transformations inflicted by man on the landscape, and the loss of human control over these phenomena. Rudolf Steiner\u2019s landscapes are both disconcerting and visually very attractive. In a subtle way, they invite the viewer to reflect on man\u2019s imprint on the landscape, which is becoming ever more striking at a time when human activities are now profoundly transforming the climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The title of the series echoes ancient understandings of the mechanism of vision, in which the eye was thought to emit a visual ray that scanned the visible world in a manner similar to <em>Ricochet<\/em>\u2019s method of shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#7e7e7e\"><em>Ricochet <\/em>est la premi\u00e8re exposition du projet au long cours de l\u2019artiste biennois Rudolf Steiner. Initi\u00e9 en 2013, ce projet riche de plusieurs centaines d\u2019images est centr\u00e9 sur les paysages des environs de Bienne et Rond- ch\u00e2tel, pr\u00e8s du studio de l\u2019auteur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#7e7e7e\">Il se d\u00e9gage une \u00e9trange et fascinante beaut\u00e9 de ces images, \u00e0 la fois famili\u00e8res et d\u00e9routantes. A leur pr\u00e9ci- sion photographique vient s\u2019ajouter des motifs, des textures, et des incoh\u00e9rences inattendus. On les devine dus \u00e0 la cam\u00e9ra et au processus de prise de vue, mais leur nature n\u2019est pas imm\u00e9diatement d\u00e9chiffrable. En sus d\u2019une recherche formelle, Rudolf Steiner m\u00e8ne en effet avec <em>Ricochet <\/em>une r\u00e9flexion sur le r\u00f4le de l\u2019art et de la repr\u00e9sentation du paysage dans le contexte actuel des bouleversements climatiques profonds qui affectent notre environnement \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle plan\u00e9taire. Si le paysage peut \u00eatre per\u00e7u a priori comme une forme d\u2019expres- sion neutre et avant tout pr\u00e9occup\u00e9e par la beaut\u00e9 des territoires, il est n\u00e9anmoins presque toujours r\u00e9v\u00e9la- teur des rapports que l\u2019homme entretient \u00e0 son environnement, des id\u00e9aux et des fantasmes qu\u2019il nourrit envers la nature, et enfin de l\u2019image qu\u2019a d\u2019elle-m\u00eame une soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Au moment de la r\u00e9volution industrielle, par exemple, les artistes s\u2019attachaient \u00e0 d\u00e9peindre des paysages grandioses et immacul\u00e9s, alors m\u00eame que la nature subissait de brutales transformations dues \u00e0 la fr\u00e9n\u00e9sie de l\u2019activit\u00e9 humaine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#7e7e7e\">Les photographies de <em>Ricochet <\/em>sont r\u00e9alis\u00e9es au moyen d\u2019un robot photographique g\u00e9n\u00e9rant plusieurs dizaines de clich\u00e9s contigus avant de les assembler par ordinateur. Utilis\u00e9e de cette mani\u00e8re, cette m\u00e9thode de r\u00e9alisation des images voit les erreurs s\u2019accumuler puisque qu\u2019au cours de la prise de vue, d\u2019une dur\u00e9e de 10 \u00e0 30 minutes, les conditions lumineuses et m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques se modifient, et g\u00e9n\u00e8rent ces aberrations visuelles. Elles font ainsi symboliquement \u00e9cho aux transformation inflig\u00e9es par l\u2019homme sur le paysage, et \u00e0 la perte de contr\u00f4le humaine sur ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes.
