The Prix Photoforum is one of the few photography awards in Switzerland with no limits of nationality, age or career stage, and no imposed theme. As a result, it presents each year a great diversity of works, testifying to the richness of the contemporary photographic scene and the plurality of uses of the image. The projects selected this year reflect the remarkable commitment of contemporary photographers and artists to exploring major issues facing our society: ecology and the position of humanity in the face of the upheavals it is causing to the planet, migration out of and within Europe, systemic violence in Western society, the need for refuge and community, the negotiation of individual and collective identities, in particular. Alongside these concerned works are precise and rigorous explorations centred on the photographic medium, and issues of perception and representation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Photoforum 2020 Prize, endowed with CHF 5,000, was awarded to the artist Akosua Viktoria Adu-Sanyah<\/a> for her project \u2018Inheritance. Poems of Non-Belonging\u2019, which is still largely unpublished. In her experimental and explorative work, the artist deals with her German-Ghanaian origins and the resulting challenges within social constructs. A need for belonging meets the urge to define the Self independently of external categorisation and free of preconceptions \u2013 the heterogeneous cultural identity leads to a sense of one\u2019s own incompatibility. While the work is strongly autobiographical, it also refers to the fatal consequences of systemic racism and racial inequality which have gained a new level of global awareness triggered by the case of Derek Chauvin and George Floyd and the subsequent global protest movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jury also decided to award a special mention to the photographer Camille Millerand for his long-term project Bled Runner<\/em>. This work, initiated in Algeria in 2015, follows the long-term migratory routes of people who have undertaken to reach Europe clandestinely, and whose trajectory will lead them to Europe, to other African countries, or on the way back to their country of origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Prix Photoforum est l\u2019un des rares prix de photographies en Suisse sans limites de nationalit\u00e9, d\u2019\u00e2ge ou d\u2019\u00e9tape de carri\u00e8re, et sans th\u00e9matique impos\u00e9e. Il pr\u00e9sente en cons\u00e9quence chaque ann\u00e9e une grande diversit\u00e9 de travaux, t\u00e9moignant de la richesse de la sc\u00e8ne photographique contemporaine, et de la diversit\u00e9 des usages de l\u2019image. Les projets s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s cette ann\u00e9e refl\u00e8tent l\u2019engagement remarquable des photographes et artistes contemporains \u00e0 explorer des probl\u00e9matiques majeures auxquelles notre soci\u00e9t\u00e9 est confront\u00e9e : l\u2019\u00e9cologie et la position de l\u2019homme face aux bouleversements qu\u2019il fait subir \u00e0 la plan\u00e8te, la migration hors de l\u2019Europe et en Europe, les violences syst\u00e9miques dans la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 occidentale, le besoin de refuge et de communaut\u00e9, la n\u00e9gociation des identit\u00e9s individuelles et collectives, notamment. Aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de ces travaux engag\u00e9s figurent des explorations pr\u00e9cises et rigoureuses centr\u00e9es sur le m\u00e9dium photographique, la perception et la repr\u00e9sentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Prix Photoforum 2020, dot\u00e9 de CHF 5\u2019000, a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cern\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019artiste Akosua Viktoria Adu-Sanyah<\/a> pour son projet Inheritance. Ce travail prot\u00e9iforme, exp\u00e9rimental et exploratoire, traite des origines allemandes et ghan\u00e9ennes de l\u2019artiste et des r\u00e9alit\u00e9s sociales qui en d\u00e9coulent. Le besoin d\u2019appartenance est confront\u00e9 \u00e0 la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de se d\u00e9finir soi-m\u00eame, ind\u00e9pendamment des cat\u00e9gorisations ext\u00e9rieures et des pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s \u2013 l\u2019identit\u00e9 culturelle h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e8nes m\u00e8ne \u00e0 un sentiment d\u2019incompatibilit\u00e9 personnelle. Si le projet est profond\u00e9ment autobiographique, il fait aussi r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au racisme syst\u00e9mique et quotidien, dont les cons\u00e9quences fatales ont connu une nouvelle actualit\u00e9 avec le cas de Derek Chauvin et George Floyd et le mouvement de protestation global qui s\u2019en est suivi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le jury a \u00e9galement souhait\u00e9 d\u00e9cerner une mention sp\u00e9ciale au photographe Camille Millerand<\/a> pour son projet au long cours Bled Runner<\/em>. Ce travail, initi\u00e9 en Alg\u00e9rie en 2015, suit sur le long terme les parcours migratoires de personnes qui ont entrepris de partir clandestinement vers l\u2019Europe, et dont la trajectoire les m\u00e8nera aussi bien vers l\u2019Europe que vers d\u2019autres pays d\u2019Afrique, ou encore sur le chemin du retour vers leur pays d\u2019origine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019\u00e9dition 2020 du Prix Photoforum a re\u00e7u les propositions de 164 artistes et photographes. Le jury \u2013 compos\u00e9 de Rolando Bassetti (directeur, Centre d\u2019Art Contemporain d\u2019Yverdon-les-Bains), Doris Gassert (research curator, Fotomuseum Winterthur), Yann Mingard (photographe et membre du comit\u00e9), Dana\u00e9 Panchaud (directrice, Photoforum Pasquart), et Maren Polte (responsable des formations BA et MA de m\u00e9diation culturelle \u00e0 la Haute \u00e9cole des arts de Berne) \u2013 a s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 douze artistes et photographes pour l\u2019exposition du Prix Photoforum 2020, a nomm\u00e9 une laur\u00e9ate et attribu\u00e9 une mention sp\u00e9ciale du jury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
