The 2021 edition of the Prix Photoforum received proposals from 114 artists and photographers. The jury \u2013 composed of Dana\u00e9 Panchaud (director, Photoforum Pasquart), Brigitte Lustenberger (photographer and member of the committee), Yann Mingard (photographer and member of the committee), Myriam Ziehli (artist, curator and lecturer) and Nicolas Polli (artist, designer and publisher) \u2013 has selected sixteen artists and photographers for the exhibition of the Prix Photoforum 2021, has nominated one laureate and has awarded two special mentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prix Photoforum is one of the few photography awards in Switzerland with no limits on nationality, age or career stage, and no determined theme. As a result, each year it presents a great diversity of works, testifying to the richness of the contemporary photographic scene and the diversity of uses of the photographic image. The projects selected this year highlight in a striking and singular way the concerns of today\u2019s society, and include many projects dedicated to social, environmental, feminist, or LGBTIQ+ struggles. Alongside these projects are works that offer counternarratives of collective or individual history. Some artists also tackle more introspective themes, often developed during the first long lockdowns, which is conducive to such approaches. Finally, some photographers present projects stemming from conceptual research on the photographic medium itself and the status of the photography artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prix Photoforum 2021<\/strong>, endowed with CHF 5,000, was awarded to the artist Tara Ulmann<\/strong> for her project Ch\u00e8re Libert\u00e9, \u00e9loge au Pardon<\/em>. This project bears witness to the passage from child to woman through the prism of an imposed femininity and inherited transgenerational traits. Through a photographic, literary and performative process, the artist deconstructs her body, the meaning of identity, social roles, the figure of the father and mother, childbirth, orientalist fantasy, or the male gaze. The different temporalities, natures of images and photographic mediums intersect and connect in an edition that echoes the traditional diary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jury gave a special mention<\/strong> to the artist Marianne Maric<\/strong> for her project Last dance in Valparaiso<\/em>. This work, produced in Chile during the 2019 riots, highlights the artist\u2019s outlet for the frightening and chaotic situation that the country and its citizens were experiencing during the artist\u2019s visit to the Festival International de Fotografia de Valparaiso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A special mention<\/strong> was also awarded to the artist Claudia Breitschmid<\/strong> for her video Entsammlung<\/em>. This film-essay examines the concept of conservation and destruction using the archives of the town of User in Switzerland as a starting point. The video explores the selection process of historiography and raises questions about what is considered worthy of preservation in our society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019\u00e9dition 2021 du Prix Photoforum a re\u00e7u les propositions de 114 artistes et photographes. Le jury \u2013 compos\u00e9 de Dana\u00e9 Panchaud (directrice, Photoforum Pasquart), Brigitte Lustenberger (photographe et membre du comit\u00e9), Yann Mingard (photographe et membre du comit\u00e9), Myriam Ziehli (artiste, curatrice et enseignante) et Nicolas Polli (photographe, designer et \u00e9diteur) \u2013 a s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 seize artistes et photographes pour l\u2019exposition du Prix Photoforum 2021, a nomm\u00e9 une laur\u00e9ate et attribu\u00e9 deux mentions sp\u00e9ciales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Prix Photoforum est l\u2019un des rares prix de photographies en Suisse sans limites de nationalit\u00e9, d\u2019\u00e2ge ou d\u2019\u00e9tape de carri\u00e8re, et sans th\u00e9matique impos\u00e9e. Il pr\u00e9sente en cons\u00e9quence chaque ann\u00e9e une grande diversit\u00e9 de travaux, t\u00e9moignant de la richesse de la sc\u00e8ne photographique contemporaine, et de la diversit\u00e9 des usages de l\u2019image. Les projets s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s cette ann\u00e9e soulignent de mani\u00e8re saisissante et singuli\u00e8re les combats et pr\u00e9occupations de notre soci\u00e9t\u00e9 actuelle : luttes sociales, environnementales, f\u00e9ministes, ou encore LGBTIQ+. Aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de ces projets engag\u00e9s figurent des travaux de relecture de l\u2019histoire collective ou individuelle. Les artistes abordent \u00e9galement des th\u00e9matiques plus introspectives, souvent d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es durant le premier long confinement, propice \u00e0 une telle d\u00e9marche. Enfin, certains photographes pr\u00e9sentent des recherches plus conceptuelles en lien avec le m\u00e9dium photographique m\u00eame et le statut de l\u2019artiste photographe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Prix Photoforum 2021<\/strong>, dot\u00e9 de CHF 5\u2019000, a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cern\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019artiste Tara Ulmann <\/strong>pour son projet Ch\u00e8re Libert\u00e9, \u00e9loge au Pardon<\/em>. Ce projet t\u00e9moigne du passage de l\u2019enfant \u00e0 la femme \u00e0 travers le prisme d\u2019une f\u00e9minit\u00e9 impos\u00e9e et de caract\u00e8res transg\u00e9n\u00e9rationnels h\u00e9rit\u00e9s. \u00c0 travers un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 photographique, litt\u00e9raire et performatif, l\u2019artiste d\u00e9construit son corps, le sens de l\u2019identit\u00e9, les r\u00f4les sociaux, la figure du p\u00e8re et de la m\u00e8re, l\u2019enfantement, le fantasme orientaliste, le male gaze (regard masculin). Les diff\u00e9rentes temporalit\u00e9s, natures d\u2019images et m\u00e9diums photographiques se croisent et se relient dans une \u00e9dition faisant \u00e9cho au traditionnel journal intime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le jury a \u00e9galement souhait\u00e9 d\u00e9cerner une mention sp\u00e9ciale<\/strong> \u00e0 l\u2019artiste Marianne Maric <\/strong>pour son projet Last dance in Valparaiso<\/em>. Ce travail, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 au Chili lors des \u00e9meutes de 2019, met en lumi\u00e8re l\u2019exutoire de l\u2019artiste face \u00e0 cette situation effrayante et chaotique qu\u2019exp\u00e9rimentait le pays et ses citoyens lors de la venue de l\u2019artiste au Festival International de Fotografia de Valparaiso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le jury a \u00e9galement d\u00e9cern\u00e9 une mention sp\u00e9ciale<\/strong> \u00e0 l\u2019artiste Claudia Breitschmid<\/strong> pour sa vid\u00e9o Entsammlung. Ce film-essai se penche sur le concept de conservation et de destruction en se basant sur les archives de la ville d\u2019User en Suisse. La vid\u00e9o explore ainsi le processus de s\u00e9lection de l\u2019historiographie et soul\u00e8ve des questions sur ce qui est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 digne d\u2019\u00eatre conserv\u00e9 dans notre soci\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
